The Orchestra

The West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra was founded in 2003. From the beginning the purpose of the orchestra was to perform classical music to a high standard and bring this to a wider community who would not normally consider attending a classical concert. We have subsequently grown to a full sized symphony orchestra performing works such as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Polovstian Dances and Peter and the Wolf.

The orchestra is always keen to collaborate with other groups and participate in concerts which promote classical music outside its usual audience. We have recently worked with Help the Aged to allow their members to come to classical concert. WYSO has a link with Leeds Guild of Singers and have twice performed concerts with them. Recently we have raised £550 for the Capetown Symphony Orchestra Youth Development Project. Past Christmas concerts have included carols with children from Hill Top and Drighlington Primary Schools. We also gave them chance to learn more about the orchestra. We have played outdoor concerts including one on the beach in Scarborough with the band Electric Eel Shock.

In addition to playing music by established composers we have premiered works by local composers such as Robert Wilsmore, Mark Marrington and Karen Gourlay as well as performing newly arranged works. We have a policy of giving solo performance opportunities to young, talented musicians.

It was for us a great pleasure to have... the Orchestra at the Parish Church... it was hugely enjoyable - and the Guilmant especially.
Thanks so much for inviting me to do it. - Simon Lindley, City Organist 2004

We all really enjoyed the concert last night, the orchestra were excellent and the whole experience was fabulous for the children and us!! - Drighlington Primary School, December 2007

my family and friends who came had a great time and got a lot out of it... you provided a very "inclusive', rich experience with lots of involvement for the kids.  Many of them seemed inspired to take up an  instrument after the concert....so well done for helping to inspire the next generation!  - Audience Member, December 2007

The concert was thoroughly enjoyable and the orchestra on magnificent form... the sensitive accompaniment and alert rythmical work of the strings and their warm tone in tender passages - Alan Bellhouse, Leeds Guide, March 2008

I cannot thank you enough and hope you appreciate how much this means to the people concerned - it can sometimes by difficult for the able-bodied to realise how much the opportunity to attend such an event means to groups such as mine who have such a restricted social life.  As one member said "it has been the highlight of the year" - Audience Member, June 2008

our members really enjoyed the performance and felt very fortunate to have had access to it.. they considered the evening a real musical treat. - Audience Member, June 2008
